What have we done? What comes next?
The Fossil Free SEPTA campaign began in March 2016. Since then, we’ve been spreading the word, building alliances, and bringing our message to SEPTA’s managers and board: No natural gas plant in Nicetown. Power SEPTA with clean renewable energy! Now we’re getting ready to step up the pressure.
In the past few months,
- We have presented our ideas and research to community groups across Nicetown, Tioga, Germantown, and East Falls, and organized a community forum at Wissahickon Charter School in Nicetown, with over 50 participants.
- We have met with SEPTA’s General Manager, their Assistant General Manager of Public Affairs, their Head of Innovation, and other senior staff.
- We have spoken at SEPTA’s monthly board meetings, and were joined by over 40 supporters at their June 23rd board meeting.
- We have opened lines of communication to City Council members and state legislators.
- We have garnered press coverage from NBC10, the Philadelphia Inquirer, PlanPhilly, and more.
- We spoke at at SEPTA’s July 21st board meeting, and delivered a letter signed by 32 organizations across the Philadelphia area, including one from State Rep Rosita Youngblood, an addendum by the Sierra Club and a resolution on infrastructure by Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light.
- Over 50 local organizations endorse this campaign. For a current list, see here.
